    Default The Handmaid's Tale

I wonder who is watching this, and who isn't. And what people's thoughts are.

I read the book a very long time ago, when we in North America were much closer to a time when women's rights to own and manage property, to work, to control their fertility, were curtailed. When married women were fired. When married women could not open bank accounts without their husband's permission, or purchase birth control. So many things have changed since then, but it often seems that many attitudes have not changed nearly as much.

There's a part of me that has watched the first three episodes and, just as I did when I first read the novel, thought how easy it would be to lose it all.

Fir those who think it's impossible, it might be instructive to look at the lives of women in Muslim countries like Iraq, Iran, Afganistan some 50-odd years ago, before the relatively recent rise of militant Islamic fundamentalism. Many of these countries were well on their way toward secularism and women were gaining many of the rights that women in the west now take for granted. Introduce religious fundamentalism to the mix, and so much vanishes in women's lives.

Could the same thing happen in North America?

Is the backstory line of The Handmaid's Tale in any way believable?

Is there anyone who thinks that some backtracking on women's rights might actually be a good thing?

And now I'll tell you what's against us, an art that's lived for centuries. Go through the years and you will find what's blackened all of history. Against us is the law with its immensity of strength and power - against us is the law! Police know how to make a man a guilty or an innocent. Against us is the power of police! The shameless lies that men have told will ever more be paid in gold - against us is the power of the gold! Against us is racial hatred and the simple fact that we are poor.

    Nope.

    Nope.

Depends on what you mean by "women's rights." If you mean "free" money for services and products related to sex and trenches, then yes. If you are poorly using the phrase as just rights for all people because there is no such thing as "women's rights," then no.

I will watch it when it makes it's way down under. I'm looking forward to it. I read the book way back when and had similar feelings to you about it. I reread it a couple of years ago, after I recommended it to a gen Y.

I think all progress on everything can be considered under threat when you have deliberate ignorance introduced into the propaganda from governments. Canada, and to some extent Australia, is further away from the effects of the latest global disease to spread around the world, but neither are immune. What is happening in the middle east should give everyone pause to rethink hard won freedoms, but instead, it seems to drive the most powerful groups to play right into the hands of the fundamentalists. I'm not into deep state conspiracy theories, but if I were, this might make its way onto the list.

Every time I see a panel, or an opinion group made up of largely white christian men, speaking to white christian men, it sends an alarm bell.

Do I think anyone wants those things? Not consciously or actively now, completely. But it's edging closer to the day it could be. But cofc, even though he's just a troll, shows how easy it is to take a ridiculous position about free money to the largest, completely unpaid, group of workers in the world. There's a big magnifying bubble that we all sit under, and those who are at risk of having to actually compete in a fair world, hold it as close as they can.

Women in Iran can Fly airplanes. In KSA they can't even drive a car legally.

But hey, the UN helped Sudies get a chair in the women's right panel/commission and they were elected by some developed secularist countries.

The fact that women are running around with ****** hats today, says a lot about how far women have come.
Rok, maybe women can benefit from affirmative action.

Probably would, but I'm not suggesting it should happen in most situations.

Watched the first episode last night. Grim stuff and saw a lot of things mirroring today.

Mostly middle eastern countries. I'm beginning to think the purple thong got to tight and turned DC into an angry feminist.
