Default Earthquake across the East Coast

Holy **** that was intense. I was walking up stairs when it happened. Thought it was just wind, then saw the whole house moving back and forth.

Apparently it was a 5.8 quake in Virginia, felt from DC to NY to Ohio. So the whole Mid-Atlantic area probably felt it.

Sounds like they are evacuating the Pentagon and other buildings in DC, I guess in case there are aftershocks. Phone lines across my area are all down and busy. I guess this is one thing I can cross off of my bucket list.

This is the only article I can find so far.

I felt it here on Long Island, NY. My house was shaking and I thought it was just a strong gust of wind or a truck driving by. Paintings on my walls just started shaking and my ironing board started shaking. It just felt weird I guess.

If you were traveling in a vehicle or were outside at the time, that might be why. Other than that, I wouldn't know.

I was asked by someone if I felt it because people as far as Detroit felt it. I'm fairly certain I did not, atleast I didn't notice it. It may be because 1) it was pretty weak by the time it reached indiana, and 2) I may have been traveling in a vehicle at that time.

Neither did I and I live very close to you. My brother and mother said they felt it though.

Some places are calling it 5.8 others 5.9. As a matter of fact, theweathernetwork.com called it both. The news link on the current weather page says "5.9 earthquake felt across the eastern half of North America.…" while the article itself is titled "5.8 earthquake felt across the eastern half of North America."

I'm no expert, but I think it's not uncommon for the strength of an earthquake to be adjusted after the fact. A little over a year ago Ottawa, ON had an earthquake. When it happened they said it measured 5.3 on the Richter scale, but a few hours later it was downgraded to a 5.0.

You guys are whining about a 5.9? Call me back when you have a 8+ and are pulling bodies out of collapsed buildings and freeways while none of the fire hydrants work because of damage to the water mains.

I had a party last night and there were bodies strewn all over the house. I thought someone was on the floor moving my bed. Probably some couple hooking up again after last night. I ignored the swaying bed and went back to sleep.

I wish I had known, I would have enjoyed realizing I was in an earthquake.

I think people on the east coast, and the news media, are making much more of this than is necessary. It was a 5.8/5.9 (depending on who you get your info from) for crying out loud. Tame by earthquake standards.

As of right now I am more concerned about the coming hurricane then the earthquake. It was cool to experience though seeing as it was new experience for me.

Get over yourselves west coasters, us east coasters don't get to experience these things very often, maybe if you were smart enough to not build on fault lines you wouldn't be ***** about us talking about it.

Obviously joking, the earthquake was cool, the 17363728585726154 status updates about it were not and the statues complaining about the statues were even more annoying.

We East Coasters understand that this was a tiny earth quake, and there have been much worse out there. But for us, an earth quake is so rare it's something that we never really expected to experience in our homes. The whole reason such a big deal has been made about it is because something like this doesn't happen, and not only does it not happen but because of the plate that it occurred on it was felt from North Carolina to Canada. So, not only does an earth quake happen in an area that doesn't get them, but it happened to so many people who never expected it causing all of this excitement.

It's like blizzards in Massachusetts, it's not a big deal they happen all the time. But if there was a blizzard in Miami, or even LA there would be much more excitement in those areas especially because many people may be seeing snow in real life for the first time.

Now you guys living on fault lines can carry on to your "It's was 5.8/9, not a big deal children." lines and let us East Coasters cross this off of our list of things we experienced in our lifetime.

On a more humorous note, when my mom felt the shaking her first reaction was to scream at me telling me to stop running around because I was shaking the whole house. I get blamed for everything.

If you were in your room on our account like you were supposed to be you would have felt it. If you were outside or in a car then you probably didn't feel it. My friend's dad was cutting the grass when it happened, her dad thought she was crazy when she claimed there was just an earth quake.

That's the same with me. My brother felt it, and my mom called from work and told me to "RUN OUT OF THE HOUSE" if I felt another tremor. Then again, I live next to an airport, so I may have thought the earthquake was just another plane flying low over the house.

I was standing over my bed trying to get my phone from behind a counter.

Why is your bed in the kitchen?

Is your bed a water bed, or a memory foam bed? Maybe that's why you didn't feel it.

I wasn't on the bed, I was on a thinkly carpeted ground. And I can have a counter in my bedroom, don't judge me, and go send out some raids.

rofl, that's about the extent of it. I was laughing at the news trying to sensationalize everything. Even experts were saying, Meh..

Didn't stop our glorious press from milking it for all it's worth.

I was going to break out into my "You kids have it easy...I was in San Francisco for the '89 quake" bit, but then I realized that would make me sound as old as I really am.

That was quite an experience though.

Repairs to the elaborate limestone exterior of the Washington National Cathedral will cost millions, officials said.
Why would we spend money to fix a church? Shouldn't god have protected it?

    Let him fix it.
